Step‑by‑Step Instructions for Air Fryer Crispy Mini Blooming Onions

Step 1: Mix Buttermilk
Begin by combining buttermilk (or milk with lemon juice) in a mixing bowl. Allow it to sit for 5 minutes, letting it thicken slightly, which helps the batter adhere better to the onions. This step creates a delicious base for your Air Fryer Crispy Mini Blooming Onions.

Step 2: Prepare Onions
Peel your sweet onions, such as Vidalia, and slice off the tops and bottoms. Using a sharp knife, make vertical cuts around the onion to form petal-like sections, ensuring not to cut all the way through, so they remain intact. This will create beautiful blooms once they are seasoned and cooked.

Step 3: Combine Dry Ingredients
In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper. Stir the dry ingredients thoroughly to ensure an even distribution of flavors. This mixture will coat your blooming onions, providing that perfect crunch you desire when preparing Air Fryer Crispy Mini Blooming Onions.

Step 4: Coat Onions
Dip each prepared onion into the buttermilk mixture, allowing the excess to drip off. Next, roll the onion in the flour mixture, ensuring it’s fully coated. For extra crispiness, repeat this step, dipping back into the buttermilk followed by the flour mixture for a thicker layer of coating.

Step 5: Preheat Air Fryer
Set your air fryer to 380°F (190°C) and preheat it for about 5 minutes. This step is crucial as it ensures that your Air Fryer Crispy Mini Blooming Onions will cook evenly and achieve that delightful golden color and crunch on the outside.

Step 6: Arrange and Spray
Once preheated, carefully place the coated onions in the air fryer basket, making sure to space them out adequately for optimal air circulation. Lightly spray the tops of the blooming onions with cooking oil. This helps achieve that beautifully crispy texture we all love in this appetizer.

Step 7: Air Fry
Cook the onions in the air fryer for about 10-12 minutes. Halfway through the cooking time, gently shake the basket to ensure even cooking on all sides. Keep an eye out for a deep golden color, indicating that your Air Fryer Crispy Mini Blooming Onions are perfectly done.

Step 8: Prepare Dipping Sauce
While the onions are cooking, prepare your dipping sauce by mixing mayonnaise, ketchup, horseradish sauce, and lemon juice in a small bowl. Adjust the flavors to your liking, adding more sauce ingredients if desired. This zesty sauce is perfect for complementing the crispy goodness of your onions.

Step 9: Serve
Finally, take your Air Fryer Crispy Mini Blooming Onions out of the fryer and transfer them to a serving plate. Enjoy them warm with the prepared dipping sauce, making every bite a delicious and satisfying experience.

Air Fryer Crispy Mini Blooming Onions Recipe FAQs

How do I choose the right onions for my mini blooming onions?
Absolutely! For the best flavor, I recommend using sweet onions like Vidalia or Walla Walla. They have a natural sweetness that enhances the dish and makes for a delightful blooming effect. Avoid stronger onion varieties like yellow or green onions, as they can be too assertive.

How should I store leftovers of Air Fryer Crispy Mini Blooming Onions?
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. To maintain their crispiness, I suggest reheating them in the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for about 3-5 minutes, which will help restore their delightful crunch.

Can I freeze uncoated mini blooming onions? How do I do it?
Yes! You can freeze uncooked, breaded onions. First, place them in a single layer on a baking sheet to freeze individually for about 1-2 hours. Once solid, transfer them to a freezer bag and store for up to 1 month. When you’re ready to enjoy them, simply cook them straight from the freezer in the air fryer for about 10-15 minutes without thawing.

What can I do if the coating isn’t crisping up as expected?
If you find your blooming onions aren’t as crispy as you’d like, try ensuring even coating during the dipping process. A second layer of coating really helps—dip them back into the buttermilk mixture, followed by the flour mixture again before air frying. Also, check your air fryer temperature to ensure it’s set at 380°F (190°C).

Are Air Fryer Crispy Mini Blooming Onions safe for pets?
Not at all! While these mini blooming onions are a delicious treat for humans, it’s important to remember that onions can be toxic to pets. Avoid sharing them with your furry friends to keep them safe and healthy!
